London Borough of Hackney – £8.3m District Heating Network Cenergist
The project involved the construction of 9 plant rooms, distribution network and HIU and internal systems serving 890 flats. The project is the first stage in creating a borough-wide heat network. Cenergist was responsible for the technical and financial design and the project management. Amber provided £4.6m investment into the project and Switch2 supplied, and now operates the billing and metering system.
The works were carried out by Hackney’s framework contractors with Cenergist responsible for ensuring design, quality and performance standards were met.
As this was a retrospective installation, the key challenges concerned minimising disturbance for residents and addressing related building issues such as asbestos. These were managed through careful project management and open dialogue with both the client and end-residents.
The project has cut resident heating and hot water costs by over 59%. As one resident explained “We did not really believe what the Council said but actually the system is even better than claimed.”
Cenergist and Amber are now working with Hackney on the next stage of the heat network roll out and Switch2 has been adopted as the preferred metering solution for all its stock.
